How do I start a business?
Starting a business in Farmington Hills is actually very easy. With the exception of a few businesses, (daycare, massage therapy, peddlers, solicitors, and outdoor seasonal sales), no license is required by the City. You simply register your business with the State (Michigan One Stop) and check to be certain that you are in compliance with all applicable regulations through State and County departments, such as the Health Department.

How do I move into a building?
Moving your business into a Farmington Hills building is as easy as 1, 2, 3. 1- Find the desired location, 2 - Verify that it meets all of the necessary zoning requirements, 3 - Sign the paperwork and move into your new business home! If you find that your desired location does not have the proper zoning for your intended use, please contact us so that we can go over options to help you create the perfect home for your business.

I want to make changes to my building, what do I need to know?
Making changes to property is simple. All the details of what you need to know are captured here (link to building code), but basically, any addition requires a permit.

Do I need a Certificate of Occupancy (C of O)?
If you are moving into any building currently occupied or vacant, or moving into new construction, you must apply to the building department for a Certificate of Re-occupancy.

Does the City of Farmington Hills offer incentives?
The City of Farmington Hills participates in all of the Economic Development programs made available by the State of Michigan. The City participates on an as-needed basis and works with companies to connect them to the capital and labor that is available through County, State, and Federal resources.

How can I get help with financing?
Whether it is start-up capital, working capital, or expansion funds, the City of Farmington Hills Economic Development Department can connect you with the necessary resources. We work with traditional and non-traditional lenders, and County, State and Federal governments, to connect you with programs such as CEED, SBA 504 loans, and Invest MI. Please contact us for further information on these and other great programs at 248-871-2500.

Can I buy City-owned property?
Currently the City has no commercially/ industrially zoned parcels available for sale.

Can I operate my business out of my home?
The City of Farmington Hills is a great supporter of entrepreneurship. Many of our residents operate thriving home-based businesses. These businesses should show no signs of commercial activity to the general passer-by (no signs, commercial vehicles, etc.) so as not to interfere with the residential feel of the neighborhood. Otherwise, there are relatively few limitations, which can all be found in our Zoning Ordinance under Home-Based Businesses.

Can I expand to the building next door even if it is zoned differently?
Please contact the Zoning Division for assistance with zoning changes.
