Paid Call Fire Fighter Position
The Farmington Hills Fire Department relies on a
dedicated core of paid-on-call firefighters (paid volunteers) to
work with its career firefighters to provide emergency services in
the community. The City has five fire stations. Paid-on-call fire
fighters are assigned to one of four satellite stations and may
have the option of working part-time shifts at the centrally
located headquarters station. The Department recruits throughout
the year for paid-on-call firefighters.

Minimum Qualifications
- United States Citizen.
- Minimum Age of 18.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Must possess a valid State of Michigan Drivers License.
- No felony convictions or criminal history.
- Physically capable of performing the duties of a
Firefighter.
Basic Job Requirements
- Respond to emergency calls as required.
- Attend all required training.
- Obtain Firefighter I Certification (within first year of
service).
- Obtain Medical First Responder Certification (within first
year of service).
- Obtain Basic Emergency Medical Technician License (within
two years of service).
- Obtain Fire II Certification (within three years of
service).
Employment Application Process
- Candidate must complete a City of Farmington Hills
Employment Application along with the Fire Department
Supplemental Application.
- Applications are kept on file by the Fire Department for one
year.
- Applications are reviewed when a need exists to hire new
recruits.
- Candidates are contacted and scheduled for interview and
agility test.

- A candidate's background is investigated, including criminal
and driving history.
- Candidates are interviewed by the Fire Chief.
- Conditional offer of employment is made pending the results
of a physical examination and drug test.

The City of Farmington Hills and the Farmington Hills Fire
Department accepts employment applications for posted
vacancies only. Resumes or other documents submitted to
the City or Department without reference to a specific

Candidates for Career Fire Fighter positions must submit a
City of Farmington Hills application when requested by the
Administration of the Farmington Hills Fire Department after
completing the Council of Western Wayne (CWW) written
examination and candidate physical agility test (CPAT). Resumes
or other supportive documents may be attached to a properly
completed application.
Applications properly submitted to the City, consistent with
this policy, will be considered until the open position applied
for is filled or until the passing of the posted cutoff date.
Pre-employment standards for Career Fire Fighter:
- When requested by the Administration of the Farmington
Hills Fire Department after completing the Council of
Western Wayne (CWW) written examination and candidate
physical agility test (CPAT), file a properly completed
application, which is acceptable to the City of Farmington
Hills, and provide satisfactory responses to requests for
additional information.
- Not less than 18 years of age.
- Citizen of the United States.
- Possess a high school diploma.
- Possess a valid Michigan driver’s license.
- Have no more than two hazardous traffic violations in
the preceding five years, or a total of no more than four
points on or after the date of application. The accident
history, regardless of fault, will be considered in the
appraisal of the applicant’s overall driving skills and,
therefore, eligibility.
- Have no prior felony convictions.
- Have no misdemeanor charges or convictions within five
years of the date of application. All misdemeanor charges
and convictions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to
determine eligibility of the applicant.
- Be free from physical defects, diseases or conditions
which may impair ability to perform job requirements.
- Be free from mental/emotional instabilities which may
impair ability to perform job requirements.
- Be free from any impediment of the senses, physically
sound and in possession of extremities.
- Pass a psychological examination administered at the
direction of the department.
- Pass all phases of a physical-medical examination,
conducted by a licensed health care professional of the
department’s choosing.
- Pass a drug test, checking for the presence of illicit
controlled substances.
- Pass the CWW written examination, attaining at least a
minimal acceptable score, as determined by the department.
- Pass the department’s Oral Review Board. Possess good
moral character, as determined by a background
investigation.
- Pass a background investigation.
- Pass a fingerprint check.
- An interview with the Fire Chief and staff will be
conducted, the results of which will be considered in the
applicant’s overall suitability for employment.
- Pass a City Manager's interview.
Hiring Process for Career Fire Fighter:
- CWW written examination & CPAT, completed by the date
specified in the job posting.
- When requested by the Administration of the Farmington
Hills Fire Department, file a properly completed
application, which is acceptable to the City of Farmington
Hills, and provide satisfactory responses to requests for
additional information.
- Documentation of the following; FFI/II and Hazardous
Materials Operations certification. Michigan or National
Registry licensed Paramedic. Documents must accompany the
completed application.
- Oral Review Board.
- Background investigation.
- Interview with Fire Chief and staff.
- City Manager interview.
- Conditional offer of employment.
- Medical-physical examination.
- Psychological evaluation.
- Appointment to position.
