The Farmington Hills Police Department is a full-service law enforcement agency that provides routine, emergency and investigative police services.  In fulfilling this mission, Police Chief Richard Niemisto has embraced a community policing philosophy, which has proven very successful in addressing crime and its causes, and quality of life issues.  Community policing involves forming partnerships between the police department and the residents and businesses.  This alliance identifies problems, issues and needs, then formulates and implements courses of action to address them.  The department offers 51 separate community policing programs, the most extensive listing in the state.

The Police Department believes great achievements that may be attained when police work with the community to create a safe and prosperous environment.  Almost two decades ago, we committed ourselves to making Farmington Hills one of the safest cities in the country.  Late in 2005, the Department was notified that Farmington Hills was again ranked among the country's safest cities.  A Kansas-based research and publication company, announced its "2004 Safest City" awards which rank 369 cities nationwide.  Their report cited Farmington Hills as the fifth safest city in Michigan, as the 12th safest city in the nation in the population category of 75,000 - 99,999 and as the 31st safest city in America overall.

The Farmington Hills Police Department is one of the finest in Michigan.  It is proud of the long line of state, national, and professional group awards it has garnered for outstanding delivery of police services, particularly the Michigan Municipal League’s “Michigan Achievement Award,” the National League of Cities “Excellence in Community Policing Award,” and the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police “Community Policing Award of Excellence.”  The department’s divisions and sections, and individual officers, are regularly recognized for exceptional police work, acts of courage, and dedication to the citizens of Farmington Hills.

The Police Department is organized into three bureaus.  The Administrative Bureau manages staff and logistical support services.  The Operations Bureau provides uniform patrol and emergency response services.  The Investigative Bureau handles criminal investigations and surveillance operations.  The department’s 120 sworn officers, 63 civilians, and 21 volunteers consistently deliver community policing services with pride, compassion, and professionalism.

Local and State Law Enforcement

The officers of the Farmington Hills Police Department are sworn to enforce the laws of the state of Michigan and the ordinances of the City of Farmington Hills.  Critical to this mission is the delivery of police services without favoritism or prejudice, being always mindful of the objectives of this organization and the mandates of aggressive and professional law enforcement.
