Compostables and Yard Waste

Compost is the miscellaneous organic waste material resulting from landscaping and/or maintenance of a home or property, including grass, weeds, fallen leaves, shrub and plant clippings, plant materials, twigs, and small limbs (not to exceed 6 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length). Each year, compost service will be provided from the beginning of April through the end of November.

Compostable materials will be collected if placed in a metal or plastic (32-gallon) container with a yard waste label or in a brown paper compost bag. Grocery bags are NOT acceptable. Total weight of bag and contents must not exceed 40 pounds. Total weight of metal or plastic containers and contents must not exceed 60 pounds. Bundles of small branches must not exceed 4 feet in length, 6 inches in diameter, and 60 pounds in weight. In the interest of worker safety, the size and weight of containers must be limited to 32 gallons and 60 pounds.

Many condo owners/associations do not need compost pickup and therefore do not use yard waste service. Yard waste is an optional service for condo owners/associations.

For additional information about backyard composting, please call the Resource Recovery and Recycling Authority of South Oakland County (RRRASOC) at (248) 208-2270 or visit the RRASOC website.

Compost Available to Farmington/Farmington Hills Residents

Compost is made available to residents of Farmington and Farmington Hills free of charge from April through October at the “Soccer, Soccer” fields at 12 Mile and Drake Roads.  Compost may be picked up from dawn to dusk, seven days a week.  There is a limit of one truckload per person and compost is for private residential use only.  Residents must bring their own shovels and containers and may be asked for proof of residency if a Park Ranger is present.
