Verify that you are eligible to vote:
To be eligible to register to vote you must be:
  • A Michigan resident (at the time you register) and a resident of your city or township for at least 30 days (when you vote)
  • A United States citizen
  • At least 18 years of age. You may register to vote when you are 17.5 years old, but you cannot vote until you’re 18.
 All qualified individuals will automatically be registered to vote when performing a driver’s license or personal identification card transaction at a Secretary of State Branch Office unless the person declines.
 
Submit your voter registration application:
Voter registration applications are accepted at the City Clerk's Office, any Secretary of State Branch Office, the County Clerk's Office, designated state agencies or military branch offices, as well as by mail and online (until 15 days before the Election).
 
Submitting your application in-person: If you hand-deliver your application to the City Clerk’s Office, the staff person helping you will take your form and you do not need to do anything else.
 
Submitting your application by mail: If you have never registered to vote in Michigan and choose to mail in your application, you will need to verify your identity by including the following:
  • Your Michigan Driver's License or State ID number where requested on the form. OR
  • The last 4 digits of your Social Security number where requested on the form. OR
  • Send a copy of ONE of the following forms of identification with your application:
  • A photocopy of your Michigan driver's license or state ID, or
  • A photocopy of a paycheck stub, utility bill, bank document or government document that lists both your name and your address.
 Submitting your application online: To submit your application online, visit the Michigan Voter Information Center at Michigan.gov/Vote.
 
Residency verification documents within 14 days of an Election:
During the 14 days prior to each Election, and through 8:00pm on Election Day, voters will need to register to vote in-person with the City Clerk's Office and provide proof of residency to be eligible to vote in that Election.  Proof of residency documents must have your name and current address.  Acceptable documents (paper or electronic) include:
  • Michigan driver’s license or State ID card
  • Current utility bill
  • Bank statement
  • Paycheck or government check
  • Other government document
