Candidates for Police Service Aide and Dispatch positions must submit a City of Farmington Hills application for each posted vacancy to be considered an applicant for employment to a vacant position. Candidates for Police Officer positions must submit a City of Farmington Hills application when requested by the Administration of the Farmington Hills Police Department after completing the EMPCO written examination. Resumes or other supportive documents may be attached to a properly completed application.

Police Service Aide
Pre-employment standards for Police Service Aide:
- File a properly completed application, which is acceptable to the City of Farmington Hills, and provide satisfactory responses to requests for additional information.
- Not less than 18 years of age.
- Citizen of the United States.
- Possess a high school diploma.
- Possess a valid Michigan driver’s license.
- Have no more than two hazardous traffic violations in the preceding five years, or a total of no more than four points on or after the date of application. The accident history, regardless of fault, will be considered in the appraisal of the applicant’s overall driving skills and, therefore, eligibility.
- Have no prior felony convictions.
- Have no misdemeanor charges or convictions within five years of the date of application. All misdemeanor charges and convictions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine eligibility of the applicant.
- Pass a psychological examination administered at the direction of the department.
- Pass all phases of a physical-medical examination, conducted by a licensed health care professional of the department’s choosing.
- Pass a drug test, checking for the presence of illicit controlled substances.
- Pass the department’s Oral Review Board.
- Possess good moral character, as determined by a background investigation.
- Pass a department-conducted background investigation.
- Pass a fingerprint check.
- An interview with the Police Chief and staff will be conducted, the results of which will be considered in the applicant’s overall suitability for employment.
- Pass a City Manager's interview.
Hiring Process for Police Service Aide
- During the announced application period, candidates shall complete the City of Farmington Hills Employment Application.
- Application must be completed in their entirety and returned to the City of Farmington Hills Human Resources prior to the published deadline.

Police Officer
Pre-employment standards for Police Officer:

- Not less than 21 years of age.
- Citizen of the United States.
- Possess a high school diploma.
- Have attained 60 credit hours or 90 quarter semester hours of college credit.
- Possess a valid Michigan driver’s license.
- Have no more than two hazardous traffic violations in the preceding five years, or a total of no more than four points on or after the date of application. Vehicle crash history, regardless of fault, will be considered in the appraisal of the applicant’s overall driving skills and, therefore, eligibility.
- Have no prior felony convictions.
- Have no misdemeanor charges or convictions within five years of the date of application. All misdemeanor charges and convictions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine eligibility of the applicant.
- Must meet the employment standards as published by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES). Employment standards are published here.
- Must be MCOLES certified or certifiable in Michigan as a law enforcement officer.
- Pass a psychological examination administered at the direction of the department.
- Pass all phases of a physical-medical examination, conducted by a licensed health care professional of the department’s choosing.
- Pass a drug test, checking for the presence of illicit controlled substances, as per MCOLES standards and processes.
- Pass the department’s Oral Review Board. Possess good moral character, as determined by a background investigation.
- Pass a department-conducted background investigation.
- Pass a fingerprint check.

Police Dispatcher
Applications can be obtained on-line and are kept on file for a one-year period.
Pre-employment standards for Police Dispatcher:
- File a properly completed application and personal history statement, which is acceptable to the City of Farmington Hills, and provide satisfactory responses to additional requests for information.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Emergency dispatching experience desirable, but not required.
- Basic typing and ability to operate a computer.
- Good communication and telephone skills.
- Have no prior felony charges or convictions.
- Have no prior criminal convictions which are punishable by more than one year in jail.
- Have no misdemeanor charges or convictions within five years of the date of application. All misdemeanor charges and convictions will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis to determine eligibility of applicant.
- Pass a department-sponsored examination (CritiCall).
- Pass the department’s Oral Review Board, attaining a minimal score of 80%.
- Pass a department-conducted background investigation.
- Pass a psychological examination administered at the direction of the department.
- Pass all phases of a physical-medical examination, to include hearing and vision tests, conducted by a licensed health care professional of the department’s choosing.
- Medical-physical examination, to include hearing and vision tests.
- Pass testing for the illicit use of controlled substances.
- The current hearing standard for unaided testing involves pure tone air conduction thresholds for each ear, as shown on the pure tone audiogram, and shall not exceed a hearing level of 25 decibels at any of the following frequencies: 500, 1000, 2000, 3000, 4000, and 6000 Hertz.
- The current standard for vision:
- Possess normal visual functions in each eye.
- Possess normal / corrected color vision. This standard may be met with use of vision correction devices (glasses or contact lenses).
- Possess normal / corrected 20/20 vision. This standard may be met with use of vision correction devices (glasses or contact lenses).

Hiring Process for Police Dispatcher:
