New Activities Center FAQs

The City of Farmington Hills is planning a modern, accessible, and welcoming new activities center that will serve older adults while also providing benefits to the broader community. The new facility will support wellness, learning, social connection, and community gatherings for residents of all ages.

The current facility is near the end of its useful life. A new Activities Center will allow the City to continue to serve the needs of the community and better support residents as they age — helping them remain active, engaged, and connected.

The proposed design includes a gymnasium, commercial kitchen, congregate dining space, flexible program rooms, and a pool. These amenities will support fitness, community meals, educational activities, and intergenerational programs. The building is also being planned so it can expand in the future if community needs grow.

The new facility will help residents age in place with dignity by offering accessible spaces, supportive services, social opportunities, and wellness programs. As an Area Agency on Aging 1‑B (AgeWay) Nonprofit‑designated Community Focal Point, the City already coordinates and delivers older‑adult services across the area with the help of more than 325 volunteers and many community partners. The new building strengthens this network and enhances service delivery.

City Council approved a contract with Neumann Smith Architects to conduct site evaluation and provide architectural and engineering services for the new center planned at the Costick Center campus.

Funding details will be shared as they are finalized, but the project represents a long‑term investment in the well‑being of current seniors and future generations in Farmington Hills.

Yes. A facility assessment was done in 2018 by Accruent and found that there was over $20,000,000 in deferred maintenance that needed to be completed over the next 10 years.  This number has only increased with inflation.  A separate feasibility study conducted by Sports Facility Companies (SFC) in 2025 determined that constructing a new facility is the most cost‑effective use of public funds.

Residents are encouraged to share comments and questions throughout the planning process. Feedback may be submitted through public meetings, Commission on Aging meetings, City-sponsored engagement opportunities, or by emailing NewActivitiesCenter@fhgov.com.
