Farmington Hills Man Arrested After Firing Gun in Standoff with Police
Aaron Gilmore, a 40-year-old Farmington Hills resident, was arrested Sunday night, outside of his residence, following a standoff with the Farmington Hills Police Department. At approximately 9 p.m., officers responded to the 26000 block of Barbados Road, following a 911 call made by Gilmore’s mother, who indicated that her son was out of control and possibly experiencing a mental health episode.
Shortly before officers arrived, the mother reported that Gilmore had begun to indiscriminately fire a handgun inside the home. Gilmore’s mother, the only other occupant of the residence, managed to escape through a bedroom window with the assistance of responding officers. Officers surrounded the home, taking cover as they heard additional gunshots coming from inside. Officers were able to contact Gilmore via a cell phone and after some negotiations, they were able to de-escalate the situation, convincing Gilmore to exit the home and voluntarily surrender. Gilmore was taken into custody peacefully and transported to the Farmington Hills Police Department where he was lodged pending charges.
Investigators obtained a search warrant for the residence, recovering several handguns, long guns and ammunition. Evidence technicians processed the crime scene where they identified and recovered eight rounds which were fired inside the home. Technicians verified that no bullets exited the residence.
Detectives submitted the investigation to The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office, which charged Gilmore with two felony offenses: Discharge of a Firearm in a building and Possession of Firearm by a Prohibited Person. He was arraigned on Monday, May 26 and a not guilty plea was entered on his behalf. Gilmore was issued a $25,000 bond and remanded to the Oakland County Jail pending his next court appearance.
“We are thankful that the quick response of our officers, the tactics used and their efforts to de-escalate this dangerous situation resulted in the peaceful resolution of this incident.” said Farmington Hills Police Chief John Piggott.
