Water and Sewer Rates
Effective July 1, 2026
The City of Farmington Hills will update its water and sanitary sewer rate structure on July 1, 2026, as part of the City’s annual rate adjustment period. The changes include eliminating the minimum water and sewer bill and adding a fixed “ready‑to‑serve” charge for both services.
Fixed (Ready-to-Serve) Charge
The fixed charge is a flat fee based on the size of a customer’s water meter, regardless of water use.
This charge helps cover essential system costs, including operations, maintenance, meter services, billing and system readiness. All properties connected to the City’s water or sanitary sewer system will be billed this charge.
Usage Charge
Quarterly bills will be prorated so that usage before July 1, 2026, is billed at 2025–26 rates, and usage after that date is billed at 2026–27 rates.
Water and sewer usage charges are based on actual water consumption, measured in units of 100 cubic feet (Ccf). Sewer usage is calculated from water use. Bills will vary each quarter depending on consumption.

System Operations and Rate Background
Farmington Hills owns its water and sanitary sewer systems, which are operated and maintained by the Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner. The City also contracts with the Great Lakes Water Authority for drinking water treatment and distribution, and with the Evergreen-Farmington Sanitary Drain Drainage District for transportation to the Great Lakes Water Authority for wastewater treatment services. Rates include charges established annually by both agencies.

Water Conservation Tips
Using less water helps lower bills and protects the environment. A faucet dripping once per second wastes about 2,700 gallons per year, costing roughly $14.72.
Indoor Conservation
- Install low‑flow faucets and showerheads.
- Place filled plastic jugs in toilet tanks to reduce water per flush.
- Turn off water while brushing teeth or shaving.
- Fix leaking faucets and toilets.
- Run dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads.
- Keep drinking water chilled in the refrigerator instead of running the tap.
Outdoor Conservation
- Water lawns between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. to reduce evaporation.
- Avoid watering sidewalks or driveways.
- Repair leaking hoses and spigots.
- Use a broom instead of a hose to clean driveways.
- Collect rainwater for irrigation.
- Choose native or drought‑tolerant landscaping.
