Protect Your Precious Cargo: Free Car Seat Inspections in Farmington Hills on September 12
The Farmington Hills Fire Department (FHFD) is promoting safer travel for children through a free car seat inspection event. Nationally certified child car seat technicians from the FHFD will perform car seat inspections and assist community members with car seat installation from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., on Sunday, Sept. 12. Appointments are required and must be confirmed no later than Friday, April 10 by emailing FDEvents@fhgov.com.
“Car seat installation can be confusing because every vehicle and every seat is a little different, but getting it right is one of the most important steps in protecting children during a crash," said Farmington Hills Fire Chief Jon Unruh. "I’m proud of our team’s expertise and dedication. They take the time to work with each family to make sure every seat is installed safely. Keeping our community’s children protected is something we take to heart."
National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data shows that nearly half of all child car seats are installed or used incorrectly. Proper installation makes a tremendous difference, reducing the risk of fatal injury by about 70% for infants and 50% for toddlers. It’s essential for parents and caregivers to understand each stage of car seat use so children are in the right seat for their age, height, and weight, and that the seat is secured correctly every time.
Technicians will check for accurate installation and possible recalls of car seats. Parents or caregivers will also be given instruction on how to install and use the car seat. Inspections take approximately 45 minutes and are free to the public with no residency requirements.
Inspection appointments will be held at Fire Station #3, located at 29260 Grand River Ave. Appointments must be confirmed by Friday, Sept. 10. To register for a free child car seat inspection appointment, contact FDevents@FHgov.com. Due to limited appointments, walk-ins will not be accepted.
