City of Farmington Hills Takes Community Members Behind the Scenes at Annual Citywide Open House Saturday, Oct. 4

The City of Farmington Hills is getting ready to take community members behind the scenes at its annual Citywide Open House on Saturday, Oct. 4. The event will feature a variety of immersive, family-friendly activities that will give attendees an inside look at everything the City has to offer to those who live, work and spend time in Farmington Hills.

The Citywide Open House will be held rain or shine from 12 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 4 on the campus of Farmington Hills City Hall, located at 31555 West Eleven Mile Road at the corner of Eleven Mile and Orchard Lake Roads. Free parking and shuttle service are available in the east parking lot at Oakland Community College Orchard Ridge Campus, located at 27055 Orchard Lake Road. The event is free, including activities for the whole family, and hot dogs and Kona Ice, while supplies last.

“From fun activities to fundamental community resources, there will be something for community members of all ages and abilities at this year’s Citywide Open House,” said Farmington Hills City Manager Gary Mekjian. “We’re excited to showcase the City’s award-winning programs and services that make life in Farmington Hills vibrant, safe and fulfilling.” 

The event will feature hands-on activities and live demonstrations with the Farmington Hills Fire and Police Departments, climbing on big trucks with the Division of Public Works, resources from more than 20 community partners, and a chance to meet Shannon Murphy from Mojo in the Morning. 

Other activities at the Citywide Open House include:

City Clerk’s Office

·         Register to vote and get information about the election.

Communications and Community Engagement

·         Star in a video about why you love Farmington Hills.

·         Pose with 3-D I 💚 FH and be featured on City of Farmington Hills social media.

Division of Public Works

·         Climb an excavator and road grader

·         Enter to win a street sign with your name on it.

·         Scribble on a snowplow with sidewalk chalk.

·         Learn about how recycling impacts the community.

Fire Department

·         Climb on fire trucks and try on a firefighter’s uniform.

·         Watch live kitchen and Christmas tree fire demos to learn how to prevent fires at home.

·         Practice fire escape plans in the mobile classroom and run through an obstacle course.

·         Watch an extrication using the Jaws of Life.

Police Department

·         Ride in a police car.

·         Watch the Farmington Hills Police Department K-9 officers test their skills.

·         Tour Police headquarters and meet evidence technicians in the crime scene lab.

·         See a drone demonstration.

·         Meet law enforcement partners, including Michigan State Police and Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.

Special Services Department

·         Play on bouncers.

·         Create a craft to take home.

·     Learn about recreational and fitness opportunities at The Hawk, including The Hawk Makerspace and The Hawk Theatre.

The Open House also serves as a kickoff of National Fire Protection Association’s Fire Prevention Week in Farmington Hills, which runs Oct. 5-11, with a focus on lithium-ion battery safety. The Farmington Hills Fire Department will share safety tips for using these small but powerful batteries that are common in everyday devices, including safe charging practices and disposal methods. They will also demonstrate the importance of having working smoke alarms in every home and share best practices with families.
