Road Commission for Oakland County to Begin Resurfacing Orchard Lake Road from South of I-696 to 13 Mile Road Monday, June 23
Beverly Hills, MI — The Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) expects to begin resurfacing Orchard Lake Road from south I-696 to 13 Mile Road in Farmington Hills, on Monday, June 23
During construction, this section of Orchard Lake Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Access to businesses and homes along the corridor will be maintained throughout the project.
As part of the project, there will be two weekend closures of 12 Mile Road at Orchard Lake Road, including the I-696 off-ramps to Orchard Lake Road. Those dates and the detour route will be announced in advance of the closures.
The approximately $4.31 million project is primarily funded with federal road dollars, with contributions from RCOC, the City of Farmington Hills and Oakland County general government (through its Tri-Party Program).
The 1.36-mile project includes:
- Milling (grinding) the existing road surface.
- Resurfacing with three inches of asphalt.
- Replacing curb and gutter in select areas.
- Modernizing traffic signals at the 12 Mile Road/Orchard Lake Road and Bristol Lane/Orchard Lake Road intersections.
- Installing dual left-turn lanes for westbound 12 Mile Road to southbound Orchard Lake Road (this work will start west of Orchard Lake Road and extend east to Greening Street).
- Sanitary sewer work by the Oakland County Water Resources Commission (OCWRC) at:
· Orchard Lake Road/Park Hill Avenue currently underway through June 23; the road is fully closed at this location).
· 13 Mile Road at Orchard Lake Road (June 23 through June 30; eastbound 13 Mile is closed at the east side of the Orchard Lake intersection).
- Updating crosswalks to be Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant.
The contractor, Florence Cement of Shelby Township, anticipates that the paving work will be completed in the fall. Traffic-signal work continuing into 2026.
This section of Orchard Lake Road carries approximately 31,850 vehicles daily.
