The Hawk Makerspace Launches “Crafted in Kindness” Handmade Hat and Mitten Drive from Nov. 29-Dec. 20
Community members can learn to sew fleece hats and mittens on Nov. 29 at The Hawk Makerspace or donate handmade items of any medium during the drive
WHAT: The Hawk Makerspace is hosting “Crafted in Kindness,” a handmade hat and mitten drive, to make a difference in the community this winter. Knitters, crocheters, weavers, sewists and other crafters can donate cozy garments from Saturday, Nov. 29 through Saturday, Dec. 20. At the end of the collection period, the winter wear will then be distributed to older adults in need through the City’s Adults 50 & Better Division. For every pair of donated hats and mittens, the creator will be entered for a chance to win prizes from The Hawk Makerspace.
Don’t know how to sew? The Hawk Makerspace is hosting workshops to teach aspiring makers to sew fleece hats and mittens on Saturday, Nov. 29. The class will cover basic sewing machine skills, and each maker will complete two sets of hats and mittens: one to keep and one to donate. By the end of the session, participants will be able to use The Hawk Makerspace’s sewing machines independently in the future.
Attendees may register for the workshop sessions here. Registration includes all materials, necessary supplies and instruction. No prior sewing experience is needed. The 1.5-hour workshop is open to makers 12 and up at $45 for residents and $50 for non-residents. Participation in a workshop is not necessary to contribute to the drive.
WHO: Metro Detroiters with a passion for crafting and community impact are invited to take part in The Hawk Makerspace’s “Crafted in Kindness” handmade hat and mitten drive. Anyone is welcome to make hats and mittens and drop them off at The Hawk Makerspace for distribution to community members in need.
Participants 12 and older can sign up for the “Crafted in Kindness” sewing workshop at The Hawk Makerspace to learn how to sew fleece hats and mittens. Workshops are open to all skill levels, ranging from absolute beginner to expert.
