The six-person committee will help guide the project, still in its preliminary stage, to ensure the new facility is reflective of the community it will serve

The City of Farmington Hills is taking the next step toward creating a new, standalone activities center to replace the Costick Activities Center with City Council’s formation of an ad hoc steering committee.

“Transformational projects like this take time, collaboration and thoughtful planning. This is an exciting step on the way to making this modern facility a reality,” said Farmington Hills Acting City Manager Karen Mondora. “By bringing together a cross-sectional group of community members, this committee will provide input to the City Council as the process moves forward.”

The ad-hoc steering committee was officially formed in early March with Council-approved appointments to the six-person committee. The committee members, which include representatives from the Parks & Recreation Commission, Commission on Aging, the senior community and broader community, and City Council, will serve a one-year term through February 2027. Committee members include:

  •         Parks & Recreation Commission member Steve Stimson,
  •         Commission on Aging chair Daniel Fantore,
  •          Community members Cynthia Gottlieb and Peyton Paymon,
  •         Mayor Theresa Rich and Council Member Jon Aldred.

The planned facility, which represents a major investment in the future of Farmington Hills, will replace the longtime Costick Activities Center with a modern, standalone facility designed to meet the community’s evolving needs. The City has already started to pursue funding opportunities to support the project, including securing an $850,000 federal grant. While the project is still in its preliminary stages, construction could begin as early as 2027.

Community input has played a key role in shaping early plans for the facility. While the final list of amenities is still in development, the new center will include a full kitchen that will expand the City’s ability to provide congregate meals, host community events and support essential programs like Meals on Wheels, which currently delivers more than 100,000 meals annually. The facility will also include a variety of gathering spaces for fitness, wellness and social programming, as well as lifelong learning opportunities. Once complete, the new center will complement existing recreational amenities on the campus of The Hawk, creating a dynamic, intergenerational hub for recreation, culture and gathering.

Until the new facility is fully operational, the City is committed to continuing to serve the community’s adults 50 & better at the Costick Activities Center. Additional updates on the project and opportunities for public engagement will be shared as planning progresses.
