Grant-Funded Farmington Hills Fire Department HQ Renovation Adds Tech-Enabled Emergency Operations Center

Posted:  10/29/2025

The City of Farmington Hills and the Farmington Hills Fire Department celebrated the grand reopening of the Fire Department’s headquarters on Wednesday, Oct. 29 at a ribbon cutting ceremony on the campus of Farmington Hills City Hall. The major renovation, which was entirely grant funded, added over 3,000 square feet to Fire headquarters, including a tech-enabled Emergency Operations Center (EOC), modern office space for Fire administrative staff, and other upgrades designed to strengthen emergency response, public safety coordination, and community resilience.

The new EOC is a secure, state-of-the-art space for City and public safety staff to coordinate responses to natural and manmade incidents. The technology-equipped space will allow personnel to monitor live video feeds, access mapping information and review other critical data from one centralized location. The renovated facility also includes dedicated spaces for Fire Department staff to work while maintaining a safe, separate area for a community shelter and notification center during emergencies.

“Public safety is the foundation of a strong, resilient community,” said Farmington Hills City Manager Gary Mekjian. “This updated facility ensures that Farmington Hills remains well-prepared for any emergency, while also providing first responders with a workspace that reflects the professionalism, skill and dedication they bring to the job every day.”

The project was made possible through the support of State Representatives Jason Hoskins and Samantha Steckloff, as well as State Senators Mary Cavanagh and Rosemary Bayer. The Farmington Hills legislators presented a $3 million state grant to the City last year, which funded the entire project.

“This project represents a significant step forward in how we protect and serve the community,” said Farmington Hills Fire Chief Jon Unruh. “The new EOC gives us the tools and space needed to effectively manage complex incidents and collaborate with regional partners with the goal of keeping community members safe.”

The Greater Farmington Area Chamber of Commerce hosted the official ribbon cutting ceremony in recognition of the peace of mind that the Farmington Hills Fire Department’s preparedness provides local business owners. The City shared their appreciation for state legislators, City Council, the design and construction teams, and all those who supported the project from conception to completion.

The City worked with Lindhout Associates Architects on the design and engineering of the updated facility and Midwest Contracting Company, LLC, for project construction. Construction began in spring 2025 and was completed ahead of schedule in September 2025.

The Farmington Hills Fire Department headquarters is co-located with Fire Staton #5 at 31455 W. 11 Mile Road on the campus of Farmington Hills City Hall.
