Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, honors the day when enslaved African Americans in Texas finally received news of their freedom on June 19, 1865—more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. The moment marked the effective end of slavery in the United States and is commemorated each year as a symbol of liberation, resilience and the ongoing pursuit of equality. Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021.
